New Year's Holiday Service

East-of-Hudson

During New Year’s Week (Monday, December 28 through Wednesday, December 30), we will operate a weekday schedule with extra service arriving in Grand Central between 10 AM and 2 PM.  Some trains will be cancelled in the AM Peak due to light ridership and to accommodate these extra trains. See a regular October 18 timetable for details.

On New Year’s Eve (Thursday, December 31), we will operate reduced service in the AM Peak and special “getaway” trains between noon and 4 PM. There will be reduced outbound service in the PM Peak, as well as extra afternoon/early evening inbound service.

There will also be hourly service departing Grand Central between 8 PM and midnight, and plenty of overnight service into the wee hours of the morning (January 1, 2010). See a Special Christmas/New Year's Holiday Timetable for details.

Remember: Those of you riding home on our early morning New Year’s service from Grand Central must have your tickets before boarding the train. And please refrain from bringing alcohol on board.

On New Year’s Day (Friday, January 1), we will operate a regular weekend/holiday schedule.

If you are traveling with the family or friends during the holidays, we recommend purchasing a ten-trip off-peak ticket. You’ll save an additional 15% off the one-way off-peak fare, and they can be used by more than one person, even when you are riding the train together.

No matter what type or how many you are buying, purchase your tickets through WebTicket for fast, free, home delivery. You’ll save 5% on any ticket (except a monthly) you purchase online. Or use one of our convenient ticket machines.

Off-Peak fares are in effect all day on New Year’s Day and that Saturday & Sunday (1/2 & 1/3).

Pick up a Special Holiday Timetable at the Grand Central Information Booth and outlying stations, or visit our schedules page for more details.

West-of-Hudson Holiday Service

Early Getaway Trains

On the Port Jervis Line, look for an early 2:45 PM train out of Hoboken (2:37 PM out of Penn Station-NY arriving in Secaucus at 2:46 PM) on New Year's Eve (Thursday, December 31). (Please note: Because of decreased ridership, the 6:11 PM from Hoboken/6:03 PM from Penn Station-NY will not operate on those evenings.)

On the Pascack Valley Line, catch an early 2:51 PM train out of Hoboken (2:37 PM out of Penn Station-NY arriving in Secaucus at 2:46 PM) on New Year's Eve (Thursday, December 31). (Please note: Because of decreased ridership, the 5:55 PM from Hoboken/5:45 PM from Penn Station-NY will not operate on those evenings.)

Late Night (Early Morning) New Year's Eve Service

On New Year's Eve, Port Jervis Line customers can catch the special 1:15 AM or 2:50 AM holiday trains from Penn Station-NY. The 1:15 AM express train from Penn Station-NY (1:25 AM from Hoboken) runs express to Suffern, then makes all stops to Port Jervis, arriving at 3:33 AM.  The 2:50 AM local from Penn Station-NY (3 AM from Hoboken) makes all stops on the Main Line to Port Jervis, arriving at 5:35 AM.

Pascack Valley Line customers can catch the special 3:25 AM holiday train from Penn Station-NY, making all stops to Spring Valley and arriving at 4:36 AM.

On New Year’s Day both lines will operate on a weekend schedule. See our schedules page for full details on service.

New Ticket Machine Center Opens in Grand Central
Our new Ticket Machine Center, located on the Main Concourse just under the archway leading to the Lexington Avenue subway, is officially open. This new facility will help alleviate the lines at our ticket windows and in the 42nd Street Passage, where ticket machines were formerly located, giving you a quicker and more comfortable purchasing experience.

The new center houses 10 machines (one for Metrocards only), and is well-lit, climate-controlled, and monitored by security cameras. It looks good, too, featuring a “Montauk” black floor, and the original façade’s large rectangular windows and bronze transom (the half moon grating above the windows). We think it fits nicely with our other “ticket” center, situated across from Track 34. (About 60% of our tickets are purchased via ticket machines. So this is truly a case of giving the people more of what they want…)

Tarrytown Station Construction

In support of improvements to the Tarrytown Station building, platforms, and overpasses, the following changes have been implemented:

  • No stopping will be allowed in front of the station building.

  • The taxi waiting area will be relocated to the drive way just north of the Village Hall.

  • All buses (except Bee Line) will drop off in the morning and pick up in the afternoon south of the station building. The Bee Line bus stop will remain in its current location.

We thank you for your patience during this work to improve your station.

New Bike Policy
You'll love Metro-North's new bike friendly policy. It makes it easier for those who use bicycles as part of their travel plans and activities to ride our trains, and it does not affect the quality of our service for you "regular commuters" who don't. So everyone wins!

The new policy now allows bicycles: On most trains scheduled to depart from Grand Central Terminal between 5:30 AM and 9 AM, 3:01 PM and 3:59 PM, 8:01 and 8:15 PM, and on connecting trains. On most trains arriving in Grand Central GCT between 4 PM - 8 PM, and on connecting trains.

Please remember: bicycles are still not permitted on inbound AM Peak and outbound PM Peak trains as well as during the holiday periods from which they are currently prohibited. (Exceptions to this policy are identified in your timetable.)

In addition, allowing bicycles on our trains will be at the discretion of our conductors, should conditions on a particular train warrant their being prohibited. (Folding bikes, however, are allowed on board all Metro-North trains. Please fold your bike before boarding and don't block the aisle or doors. ) View a bike permit application for full details.

Online Ticket Scams

Beware of online ticket scams! The only official way to purchase Metro-North Railroad tickets online is from WebTicket. Some customers have reported "bogus" websites offering nonexistent ticket discounts.

Do not use these sites. If a railroad ticket offer seems too good to be true -- it probably is. You will never receive a ticket and you will have given someone access to your credit card information.

Again, only purchase tickets online from WebTicket. To avoid confusion, bookmark that page today.
